Lethbridge chief of police suspends five officers in meme investigation

Lethbridge, Canada – Five Lethbridge police officers from the province of Alberta have been suspended with pay as part of an investigation into the online circulation of inappropriate images.

According to sources with knowledge of the situation the investigation has been dubbed as “MemeGate.”

Several memes were circulated among Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) officers which were disrespectful to LPS brass and NDP MLA Shannon Phillips, according to those sources.

The investigation began in 2018 and last week Chief of Police Shahin Mehdizadeh sent a service wide email announcing the suspensions.

“As of today five employees have been relieved of their duties,” Mehdizadeh stated in the email.

“This file will be damaging to LPS however we need to ensure transparency in the process for public interest and also the integrity of the organization,” he added.

It is the latest revelation involving Phillips and the Lethbridge police as two officers have already been disciplined for their behavior towards Phillips and five others are also under investigation for allegedly searching Phillip’s private information on police databases with no clear justifiable purpose.
