Design student creates gun that fires tears

Eindhoven, Neatherlands – During Dutch Design Week 2016, Taiwanese designer Yi-Fei Chan presented her project named ‘Tear Gun’, a device that collects and freezes actual human tears to shoot them back at the person who caused the crying.

Brought up under a strong sense of authority, Chen was taught that disagreeing with teachers was impolite. After an altercation with her tutor about an impossible deadline, Chen got punished for not submitting that assignment on time. Yi-Fei Chen created this metaphoric device to show her personal struggle with speaking her mind.

The concept allows the designer to channel her emotions and stand up to authority. Tear Gun is a small pistol that collects tears in a pocket under the eye, freezes them in dry ice and shoots them like bullets.

The design was Chen’s final Master’s project at the Design Academy of Eindhoven, visualizing her personal struggle. Tear Gun is Chen’s way to express her emotions by using design as a vehicle to stand up for herself.
