Hamilton police officer arrested and charged with sexual assault

Hamilton, Canada – A sworn police officer with Hamilton Police Service has been charged with sexual assault causing bodily harm following an investigation by Ontario’s police watchdog.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was contacted by Hamilton police on November 7th following a complaint alleging a male had been sexually assaulted the day prior.

On Wednesday, the SIU announced Off. Ryan Cole has been charged with one count of sexual assault causing bodily harm.

Hamilton Police Service said Cole is a six year member, confirming the charge is related to an on-duty incident in November 2020.

The charge came about from “an interaction that occurred while this individual was in police custody,” according to the union representing the city’s officers.

The Hamilton Police Association said it’s “committed to supporting.”

The officer has been placed on administrative duties and has no contact with the public, the police service stated in a release.

Cole was arrested Wednesday and released with conditions including that he not associate with any witnesses or carry a firearm, said the SIU.

He’s scheduled to appear in court in Hamilton on May 3rd.

As the case is before the courts, both the SIU and Hamilton police stated they will not be commenting further.
