SIU investigation after police shoot and kill man in Toronto while searching for missing person

Toronto, Canada – A 45-year-old man was shot and killed by two police officers in downtown Toronto.

Around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, police arrived at the apartment on 291 George Street, in search of a missing person, according to police.

Police had an “interaction” with a man after entering his third floor apartment unit and two officers fired at him, the Special Investigations Unit said.

Toronto paramedics said they rushed the man who was in life-threatening condition to hospital. According to the SIU, he died from his injuries in the hospital at 4:17 a.m.

Police said earlier that there was a report that the man was armed with a gun.

The apartment on George St, near Dundas Street East, is a five-storey building owned by Toronto Community Housing.

The SIU is now investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.

Five investigators and three forensic investigators from the SIU have been assigned to the case. The agency has designated two subject officials and seven witness officials.
