Scientists believe they have discovered the smallest reptile on earth, a subspecies of chameleon the size of a bean.

The male Brookesia nana, also called the nano-chameleon, has a body of just 13.5mm.

This makes it the smallest of the 11,500 known species of reptiles.

Its length from top to tail is 22mm.

The female is much bigger at around 29mm.

The Scientific Reports Journal stated “The new chameleon is only known from a degraded montane rainforest in northern Madagascar and might be threatened by extinction.”
